Scottish Labour hold onto council seats with triple by-election victory

LABOUR have won three Scottish council by-elections, holding onto seats the party resigned after the General Election.

Jayne Sangster won the councillor position for Keir Starmer’s party after votes were counted in Kilmarnock West and Crosshouse this morning.

The by-election had been held after Lillian Jones resigned her position on the council. She had been elected as the MP for Kilmarnock and Loudoun in the July General Election.

Sangster received 1213 votes, with her closest challenger being the SNP's Marie Robertson on 1025 votes.

Turnout was 23.4%.

Also in East Ayrshire, Scottish Labour's Jim Kyle has been elected to serve as councillor for Doon Valley – taking over from Elaine Stewart, who was elected MP for Ayr, Carrick and Cumnock.

He received 516 votes, with Tory Tracey Clark taking 2nd place with 410 votes.

David Russell, meanwhile, is Scottish Labour's newest councillor for Whitburn and Blackburn after now local MP Kirsteen Sullivan's resignation.

However, Scottish Labour also lost a seat on Edinburgh Council in a shock result on Friday.

Louise Spence of the Scottish Liberal Democrats has been elected to serve as councillor for the city's Colinton and Fairmilehead ward.

Scottish Labour's Sheila Gilmore ultimately took third place behind the Conservative candidate Neil Cuthbert.

This is despite the by-election coming after Scottish Labour's Scott Arthur resigned from his councillor position after being elected as a Scottish Labour MP for Edinburgh South West.
