Scottish jeweller who turned £5,000 into 1.5m launches at St James Quarter

Scottish jeweller Laura Bond is launching a pop-up at the St James Quarter to showcase her latest collection of earrings.

During the weekend of 24 and 25 June, she will introduce the brand and offer a sample sale with more than 300 exclusive designs.

Their new collection, crafted from responsibly sourced gold, will be available at the Edinburgh retail destination later this month, having previously been thwarted by Covid-19 lockdowns.

The family run business launched in late 2019, and despite unexpected challenges posed by lockdown, was picked up by celebrity fans such as Michelle Visage and Jessie J, as well as Game of Thrones actress Nathalie Emmanuel, who wore Laura Bond jewellery to the 2022 Oscars.

Starting with only £5,000 of initial investment to cover product costs, the business used social media to gain a following and is now valued at 1.5m.

With eight years experience in the luxury jewellery market, founder and creative director Laura Bond identified a need for contemporary body jewellery at accessible prices.

Together with sister Georgie, husband Doug and two other staff, the team specialise in affordable solid gold jewellery for cartilage piercings.

Laura commented: “I got my first piercing when I was a teenager and my love for the trend grew from there.

“I’ve got 14 piercings in total, but I was really frustrated that I couldn’t find beautiful dainty earrings that I could afford - my style was feminine and I didn’t like the grungy piercings that all the studios stocked.

“I couldn’t find a brand selling affordable solid gold earrings in the style I wanted to buy, so I decided to create it.”

Nick Peel, managing director at St James Quarter, said: “Laura Bond is an exciting new creative talent and we know her brand is something that our guests will love.

“The pandemic was an extremely difficult time for many people so it’s great to now be able to celebrate the success of small Scottish business.”
