Scottish Highlands loch walk crowned one of the best in the UK this winter

An Aviemore walk has been crowned the best in Scotland for those looking for a festive hike this winter season.

With people across the UK looking to head out into the countryside for a picturesque walk, David Wilson Homes has compiled a list of the best walking routes in different parts of the nation, from the Elidir Trail in Wales to Rydal Water in the Lake District.

Its pick for Scotland is Loch Morlich in the Highlands, which has a distance of 3.1 miles and takes approximately 1.5 hours to complete. David Wilson Homes has classed it as an 'easy' walk, making it perfect for those unable to take on a challenging hike.

Loch Morlich is a freshwater loch surrounded by sandy beaches. In 2009, these beaches received a Seaside Award by the Keep Scotland Beautiful (KSB) campaign, the first time a freshwater loch had done so.

The Loch Morlich Trail loops around the water, giving walkers one-of-a-kind views of the mountains above. In some conditions, the Cairngorms can even be seen reflected in the water.

The Cairngorm Reindeer Centre is also just a short walk away from the loch, which is home to Britain’s only free-ranging herd of reindeer. Visitors can embark on daily guided Hill Trips to see the reindeer for themselves.

Additionally, Loch Morlich is home to a watersports centre, with kayaking, sailing and windsurfing on offer. There is also a yacht club and cycling routes around the loch.

Commenting on the walk, David Wilson Homes stated: "Get ready to explore Scotland’s finest settings along this easy walking trail. Surrounded by pine forests and fringed by glorious beaches, the Loch Morlich walk starts and ends in the Highland town of Aviemore.

"The snow covers Cairngorms summits for more than 100 days a year, providing a picturesque backdrop for your stroll."
