Scottish groom's touching tribute to bride's dad during proposal at Edinburgh farm

A Scottish groom created an incredible tribute to his girlfriend's dad as he proposed to her in Edinburgh last week.

Getting down on one knee to pop the question, Jimmy Prentice and his now fiancé Catherine had been spotted at Craigie's Farm in South Queensferry as they experienced the magical moment.

Taking Catherine to the popular farm for what Catherine believed to be a day out, Jimmy explained that he had been planning the event for weeks, with the location having an incredibly special meaning to the couple.

Meeting four and a half years ago in Glasgow, Jimmy shared that he had never been able to meet Catherine's dad, who tragically passed away from leukaemia when she was only 14-years-old.

However, over the years, Catherine had spoken about her dad's passion for growing sunflowers, sparking Jimmy's plan to pop the question surrounded by them.

Enlisting the help from staff at Craigie's Farm, the couple had taken a stroll through the flowers before Catherine turned around to see Jimmy on one knee.

Speaking about the special day, he said: "We met in a pub on the southside of Glasgow four and a half years ago. On a personal note I had no right being there as I was a Rangers fan and it was a Celtic pub and on that particular day it was Old Firm Day and Catherine along with mutual friends of ours were all celebrating Celtics win. The only seat in the place happen to be right next to Catherine and so I got a drink, sat down and here we are a few years later despite our football differences.

"I've been thinking of proposing for a long time now and given the fact that COVID and lockdown has now eased and the fact we lost a few friends n family to illness and otherwise along the way, I feel the time for some positive energy is paramount about now.

"Catherine's father sadly lost his battle with leukaemia when she was just 14 but one of his passions was growing sunflowers, and so with that in mind I went ahead and got a sunflower tattoo on my chest in homage to the man with Catherine's name through it.

"I tried to source a sunflower field in order to propose and almost went elsewhere, but then I stumbled across Craigies -the posts I saw on Facebook looked really cool and inviting so I was sold instantly and began corresponding with staff there who were so kind and generous and were with us every step of the way. Staff member Holly was even on hand to capture our special moment. They then went even further and presented us with a delicious cake to say congratulations."

With the proposal caught on camera by staff, the couple have said they are now beginning to plan for the big day, and thanked the farm for being a part of their celebrations.

Jimmy added: "The plan now is to save for maybe a couple of years and look at getting married in 2025. I personally would love to get married in Pitlochry, but I dare say the bride to be will ultimately have the last word. Once again we would like to extend our thanks for all the support and kindness from all the Craigies staff in being a huge part of our engagement."

With sunflower picking and walks still available to book at Craigie's for a few more weeks, you can find more information here.
