Scottish Government seeks new chair at Scottish Enterprise

The Scottish Government has announced it is looking to appoint a new chair of the board of Scottish Enterprise for a three year term starting 1 August.

The successful candidate will “provide active, dynamic leadership in enabling Scottish Enterprise to support delivery of the Scottish Government’s National Strategy for Economic Transformation”, the advert reads.

The current chair is Lord Smith of Kelvin, who was chair at the Weir Group in 2013 before joining SSE until 2015. He then led the UK Green Investment Bank until 2017. He is currently also chair at the British Business Bank and Forth Ports, as well as being chancellor of the University of Strathclyde.

The government announcement states that Scottish Enterprise is facing a “period of change” and the chair will lead the board through this “significant period”. It says they must also have a track record of “quantifiable success at this senior level”.

The new chair of the Scottish Enterprise board will receive £49,049 per annum for a time commitment of around 1.75 days per week.

The new chair will also have expenses reimbursed as a result of its job, “reasonable travel and subsistence costs” and it will also reimburse child care expenses and carer fees if dependent.

The appointment is non-pensionable and the applicants for public appointments must be legally entitled to work in the UK.

The closing date for applications is 23 May with a shortlisting meeting on 30 May. Applicants will be advised of the outcome of the shortlisting meeting on 3 June, with interviews completed by the end of that month.

The Scottish ministers will decide the appointment in July, with the post scheduled to begin in August.

The selection panel will comprise Colin Cook, director of economic development at the Scottish Government; Nora Senior, chair of the Enterprise and Skills Strategic Board; Brendan Dick, former managing director BT Regions, chair of SCDI and CBI Scotland Council Member; and professor Alec Spencer, public appointments adviser and ethical standards commissioner.
