Scottish Government reports no deaths and 267 new Covid cases in Tayside

The Scottish Government has confirmed no coronavirus deaths were reported in Tayside in the last 24 hours.

The area's death toll - composed of people who first tested positive for the virus within the previous 28 days - remains the same at 816.

Data from Public Health Scotland also shows that 267 new cases were recorded overnight in the region.

In total, Tayside has recorded 77,731 cases of Covid-19 since the pandemic began.

The figures come with the regular Monday caveat that registry offices are closed across Scotland over the weekend and no deaths can be recorded.

The latest local vaccination data shows that 334,209 people have had at least one jag, 314,610 have received at least two, while 250,477 have also received a third, or booster, vaccination.

Across the country, 6,934 new positive cases of Covid-19 have been recorded in the last day.

There were no Covid-confirmed deaths reported meaning the country's overall death toll from the virus remains the same at 10,198.

There are currently 1,435 people in Scotland's hospitals being treated for covid with 38 in intensive care.

The figures come as the final restrictions put in place in response to the Omicron variant sweeping across Scotland have been eased from today.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced last week nightclubs would be able to reopen, while the caps on indoor events, table service requirements for venues selling alcohol and social distancing will also be removed.

The measures were put in place in December - along with a maximum capacity in outdoor events of 500, which was eased last Monday as the new variant caused a spike in cases - eventually peaking at more than 20,000 in the first days of 2022.

However, infections started to dip faster than expected, never reaching the worst case scenario the Scottish Government envisaged as possible - with projections suggesting 50,000 people could be infected daily with the new variant at the peak of the wave.

But the requirements for face coverings and self-isolation will remain for the foreseeable future.
