Scottish Government confirms three deaths and 288 new Covid cases in Tayside

The Scottish Government has confirmed three coronavirus deaths were reported in Tayside in the last 24 hours.

The area's death toll - composed of people who first tested positive for the virus within the previous 28 days - rises to 806.

Data from Public Health Scotland also shows that 288 new cases were recorded overnight in the region.

In total, Tayside has recorded 75,703 cases of Covid-19 since the pandemic began.

The latest local vaccination data shows that 333,744 people have had at least one jag, 313,403 have received at least two, while 247,787 have also received a third, or booster, vaccination.

Across the country, 7,752 new positive cases of Covid-19 have been recorded in the last day.

There were 31 Covid-confirmed deaths reported meaning the country's overall death toll from the virus rises to 10,093.

There are currently 1,546 people in Scotland's hospitals being treated for covid with 42 in intensive care.

The figures come as Nicola Sturgeon said restrictions on large indoor events would be lifted on Monday 24th January.

This means that concerts and large indoor events in Scotland will be back on in time for Burns Night.

In her covid update to Holyrood this afternoon, the First Minister said that in light of the improving situation with Omicron most of the restrictions imposed at the turn of the year would be lifted.

Sturgeon said the limits on on attendance at indoor public events would be lifted in addition to ending the requirement for 1 metre physical distancing between different groups in indoor public places.

The need for table service in hospitality premises serving alcohol is also being lift as is the ban on nightclubs opening.
