Scottish Friendly promotes new chief financial officer

Scottish Friendly has appointed Alan Rankine as its new chief financial officer.

Currently chief actuary at the mutual, he will take up the new role from 1 January 2023.

Rankine will also become an executive director of the board, with both appointments subject to regulatory approval.

He will replace current finance director Martin Pringle, who is leaving Scottish Friendly to "pursue other career opportunities".

After taking on the acting chief executive role, Pringle agreed to step back into the chief financial officer role to ensure a smooth handover to Stephen McGee and to help with the process of looking for his successor.

Rankine has been chief actuary at Scottish Friendly since 2018 and has also held senior positions at Deloitte UK, as well as working at Standard Life.

He will oversee the finance and investment teams and will be responsible for shaping the corporate strategy and culture of the organisation.

Scott McNeill, current head of financial insurance and risk, has been appointed to replace him as chief actuary from the start of next year.

In addition, Scottish Friendly has hired Alexander Manas as commercial director, taking over from Neil Lovatt, who recently retired.

Manas has 20 years’ experience working in senior strategic, corporate development and portfolio management roles in Belgium and the UK, and will be responsible for overseeing the marketing, partnerships and product delivery functions. He will take up the position on 14 November.

McGee commented: “I’m delighted to announce the fulfilment of these senior roles within Scottish Friendly, as we continue on our journey to becoming the UK’s leading mutual insurer.

“Having individuals with the calibre and experience of Alan and Scott stepping into these roles shows the depth and strength of talent within the organisation.

“In addition, Alexander will bring with him 20 years’ experience working with large teams to drive strong commercial results, so I am thrilled that he has accepted my offer to join Scottish Friendly as we continue to provide value to our members and the wider community.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Martin for his hard work and commitment over the years and to his dedication to significantly growing our society during his time - I wish him well for the next stage in his career.”
