Scottish director's debut film scores four Bafta nominations

A SCOTTISH director and writer's debut has been recognised with multiple nominations at the Baftas.

Aftersun, from Charlotte Wells, is in the running to win four Baftas, including “outstanding British film” – however, it was snubbed in the best film category.

Wells has received a nomination for the category of “outstanding debut by a British writer or director”.

Paul Mescal, who plays Calum Paterson in the drama, has been nominated for best leading actor, and Lucy Pardee for best casting on a feature film.

The 100-minute-long period film tells the story of father Calum (Paul Mescal) and daughter Sophie (Frankie Corio) navigating their relationship on a holiday to Turkey in the late 1990s.

Wells returned to her hometown of Edinburgh to open the city’s International Film Festival with Aftersun in August last year.

The film has since received glowing reviews, including 96% on Rotten Tomatoes and 7.8/10 on IMDB. It made $2.8 million at the boxoffice, and has been recognised by the British Independent Film Awards, the Directors Guild of America, the Gotham Independent Film Awards and the New York Film Critics Circle awards.

All Quiet On The Western Front, a Netflix adaptation of the 1929 anti-war novel by Erich Maria Remarque, scooped up 14 nominations for this year’s Baftas, which are set to take place on February 19.

Nominated alongside Aftersun for the best debut by a British writer, director or producer is Blue Jean, Electric Malady, Rebellion and Good Luck To You, Leo Grande.

Also on the books to win at this year’s, awards is The Banshees of Inisherin, Elvis, Everything Everywhere All At Once, See How They Run and Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical.

The Baftas will take place at 7pm on February 19, available to watch on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
