A SCOTTISH council has voted in favour of the creation of the new national park in Galloway, South and East Ayrshire.
South Ayrshire Council’s decision to support the creation of a new national park has been welcomed as a “vote for a better future” giving a positive response to the public consultation led by NatureScot.
“This is a hugely positive outcome, a vote for a better future for our communities, for nature and the environment,” said Rob Lucas, Chair of The Galloway National Park Association (GNPA).
“We have continued to speak to individuals and groups in both South and East Ayrshire about the idea and its benefits.
“A new National Park will guarantee major public investment and a stronger voice for the people of our region as well as bringing new jobs and business opportunities.”
Council officers recommended the move, stating that “the proposed National Park is a positive step which could support the visitor economy in South Ayrshire, support addressing climate and nature emergencies, and enhance public services and community wellbeing, while also enhancing the area’s existing UNESCOBiosphere status.”
NatureScot has revealed that nearly 1000 people have attended the 30-plus public consultation events and online sessions about the creation of the new park since the beginning of the consultation.
“Whatever views you hold on the proposal, we encourage everyone who has yet to do so to get informed and have their say,” said Pete Rawcliffe, NatureScot’s head of people and places.
The public consultation launched by NatureScot is open until February 14 at midnight and Scottish ministers will then decide if the designation goes ahead.
