THE accent of a Scottish city has been found to be one of the most-liked in the UK.
According to research by Preply, an accent classes provider, the Edinburgh accent was the third most appealing accent across the nations.
Praised for its smooth rhythm and distinctive, clear ‘r’ and ‘ch’ sounds, it was the highest placed Scottish accent on the list.
The research stated that the Edinburgh accent “represents the understated elegance of Scotland”.
The next highest ranking Scottish accent was Glaswegian, which came in at number 22.
The Highlands accent, meanwhile, placed 28th and Hebridean 41st.
The study conducted by Preply incorporated insights from six distinct studies, including the YouGov accents study and data from Match.com.
Altogether, it found that accents find favour when they have a fluid rhythm and melodic tone and embody a unique regional character.
Meanwhile, less favoured accents were more difficult to understand or newly-evolved.
The Manx accent was found to be the least favoured of the 50 included in the survey.
