Scottish city named among the world's top LGBT+ destinations

A SCOTTISH city has been named one of the world's top LGBT+ destinations by the respected travel publisher Lonely Planet.

Edinburgh was named alongside spots around the globe, including Cape Town in South Africa and Bangkok in Thailand.

The queer holiday guide has been compiled by Alicia Valenski who is determined to make the world more accessible for everyone.

From drag bars to queer swimming clubs, these "delightfully diverse" destinations are said to offer a range of inclusive activities.

Edinburgh named one of the world's top LGBTQ+ travel destinations by Lonely Planet

Discussing Scotland's capital, Lonely Planet highlighted a number of excellent locations visitors need to check out, including the radical bookshop Lighthouse run by Mairi Oliver.

The guide said that the store is full of gay books from the Eighties and Nineties and dubbed it a "lovely intergenerational space"

The original founders, who are in their 70s now, are usually there but the shop also includes staff from across age ranges.

Typewronger Books was highlighted as another one of Edinburgh's must-visit queer spaces.

Tee Hodges, who founded the hub, is a nonbinary printer who has their own Riso printer.

They run printing workshops and teach people to make zines, and they run an annual Edinburgh Zine Fair, which is always worth looking out for.

For something more outdoorsy, try the Edinburgh Queer Hiking group, which has hundreds, if not thousands, of members across the city.

They’ll take people who don’t live in Edinburgh out on guided excursions and walks.

The publisher adds: “There’s also Queer Swim Edinburgh, where they’ll take you on a guided tour down towards the Newhaven area to places where you can swim.

"That’s especially nice if you’re nervous to try wild swimming on your own for the first time, or maybe it’s your first time in a swimsuit since transitioning, or whatever the case may be.”

Lonely Planet’s The LGBTQ+ Travel Guide is available from the publisher's website and is priced at £22.99.
