Scottish city has highest number of Greggs in the UK but it is not the sausage roll capital

Glasgow has been named as the city with the highest number of Greggs outlets in the UK. The Scottish local authority is home to 54 stores, followed by 49 in Birmingham and 43 in Leeds.

A total of 2,199 Greggs outlets are spread across the UK and the company says each store produces a daily average of 1,500 sausage rolls or about 545,000 in a year. The high street bakery has revealed that it makes 29.4m sausage rolls for Glasgow every year, or 46 for every Glaswegian.

But while the Dear Green Place is number one for the most Greggs, Newcastle has been named as the sausage roll capital of Britain. There are 33 Greggs outlets producing around 17.9m sausage rolls in The Toon each year.

When compared to the population that adds up to 60 sausage rolls per person, or enough to allow everyone in Newcastle to enjoy at least one savoury snack every week. Also in the North East, Gateshead is second for the highest rate of sausage rolls churned out at 58, with Merthyr Tydfil in Wales following at 55, reports the Mirror.

But across the regions, by far the most Greggs sausage rolls are consumed in the North East - 36 per person, per year the next highest of the English regions being the West Midlands at 21.

Meanwhile, Londoners have it the hardest when it comes to access to Greggs sausage rolls. Only enough are made to allow people living in the capital 12 sausage rolls each year, or one per month.

The only exception is the City of London, where the results are skewed by the low population and high number of people working in the capital’s financial district. But if the savoury snacks produced in the Square Mile were exclusively made for residents, there would be enough to feed everyone a sausage roll every day of the year and still have 77 each left over.
