A POPULAR Scottish brewery has released a special beer for International Women’s Day beer, made entirely by female staff members.
This is the sixth time Bellfield Brewery, based in Edinburgh, has brewed a special beer to mark International Women's Day (IWD) on March 8.
This year’s beer, Rational Creatures, was designed by director Marie Brown, sales and marketing manager Anna Orr, co-founder Giselle Dye, and taproom team members Jessica Shoemark and Phoebe Crosbie.
The beer will go straight into keg and cask, with some bars and pubs across Edinburgh already putting in pre-orders.
In a blog post, the brewery said: "This year we’ve designed a beer that looks back at our 'Mimosa' IWD beer of 2020.
"Mimosa never got its moment in the sun as it was launched just a few days before the first Lockdown at the start of the pandemic.
"But we were so proud of it – and it tasted so good – that we decided to try and recreate the recipe, with a few tweaks (to account for new processes we’ve introduced since then)."
The name comes from Jane Austen’s much-loved final novel, Persuasion, which included the line: "But I hate to hear you talking so, like a fine gentleman, and as if women were all fine ladies, instead of rational creatures. We none of us expect to be in smooth water all our days.”
The beer is said to boast flavours of citrus, pine, orange and tangerine and all will feature balanced, with a honey-like and toastie malt profile thanks to the mixture of light malts including Scottish Pale, Vienna, Cara and Cara Gold.
The beer will officially launch in their Edinburgh taproom on Thursday, March 6, from 5.30pm.
For every pint of Rational Creatures 2025 sold over the weekend of IWD in Bellfield's taproom, 50p will be donated to Scottish Women’s Aid.
This year’s IWD theme is #AccelerateAction.
The brewery said: "The call to action is that we can all – collectively – in our businesses, workplaces and social lives, play our part to accelerate action towards gender parity."
