Scottish Braveheart actor Mike Mitchell dies at 65 after boat ride in Turkey

Tributes have been paid to Braveheart actor Mike Mitchell after the Scottish star’s sudden passing in Turkey.

The 65-year-old appeared alongside Mel Gibson in the 1995 hit and had a role in the oscar-winning 2000 epic Gladiator in a long career that spanned Hollywood blockbusters and soap operas including Emmerdale.

Mitchell, who had previously scooped a haul of bodybuilding titles and been crowned ‘Mr Universe’, was described as an ‘honest man and a dear friend’ by his manager.

It comes after American news site TMZ reported the actor had passed from natural causes at a marina in the Fethiye district of Muğla province.

Turkish police are investigating the incident, but early reports have suggested he suffered a heart attack while showering.

In 2006, he also suffered heart issues after winning his fifth World Fitness title.

Mitchell leaves behind his wife and children.

The Daily Mirror reports his rep telling TMZ: "It was very hard to believe. The sudden death of an international actor we managed, an honest person, a real actor, a true friend, my dear friend, has saddened us deeply.

"I've always been honored to be your manager. I wish patience to you wife, dear Denise Mitchell, and your children.

"Getting to know you and gaining your friendship is invaluable. Sleep in the lights. RIP."
