A BASKETBALL player who was signed and then sacked in the space of a month by a Scottish club is believed to be a suspect in a fatal shooting in the US.
The Caledonia Gladiators signed Malik Dunbar, 28, in December last year but have let him go this week stating his release was due to a disciplinary matter unrelated to the investigation.
The East Kilbride-based side said it had become aware of Dunbar’s shooting allegations after he was let go by the club.
Dunbar signed for the Caledonia Gladiators at the beginning of December, two months after reportedly being named as a suspect in a gun murder in Augusta, Georgia.
Arthur Braxton, 32, was found dead outside in the car park of the Mexican restaurant El Presidente, with multiple gunshot wounds on the evening of October 4.
Local media at the time in Augusta reported that Dunbar was a suspect in the case.
Caledonia Gladiators also ended Dunbar’s teammate Jared Wilson-Frame's contract at the same time saying the termination of both their contracts were “with immediate effect” and were based on a “serious breach of club discipline”.
The statement added: “Following this breach, we have since been made aware of serious allegations circulating on a separate matter in relation to Malik Dunbar in the US and prior to his arrival with the club.
“We work with reputable sports agencies who supply players to clubs across the world and no allegations were disclosed as part of our due diligence process.”
It also said an internal review had been launched into the signing process.
According to the BBC the sports agency Interperformances, which represented Dunbar, said they had not been made aware of his links to the investigation into the shooting and only learned about the matter through media reports.
