The Scottish band, The Proclaimers, have announced their backing for Welsh independence. In an interview with Golwg magazine, brothers Craig and Charlie Reid, were promoting their new "political" album - 'Dentures Out'.
The band are famous for songs such as 'I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles), 'I'm on My Way' and 'Sunshine on Leith', but have garnered support from Scottish nationalists due to their support for Scottish independence. On Monday this week, Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said the devolved administration planned to hold a referendum on the country's independence on October 19, 2023.
Following Ms Sturgeon's announcement, the brothers said during an interview with Golwg that they would support independence for Wales if they were Welsh. "Without a shadow of a doubt, I would," Craig Reid said.

He also said that Wales needed to "act, vote and campaign" and to be a "social mass movement" to achieve their goal. He added: "The pressure still has to be maintained, because the pressure is always going to come from other directions - it's coming from the unionists, from the English nationalists, who want Scotland and Wales and Ireland to be second class, and are now open in their contempt for what they call 'the Celtic fringe'."
His brother, Charlie, said: "Whatever you're defending or trying to expand, whatever you're trying to improve - you have to fight back. If you don't, you're going to be crushed by these people... I think there are more reasons than ever to push on."
The duo also said that they were a fan of Welsh folk singer, Dafydd Iwan, after seeing a video of him performing his iconic song 'Yma o Hyd' in front of thousands of fans ahead of the Wales v Austria game in March. Craig described the performance as "fantastic", while Charlie said: "Well done to him for doing something that we haven't achieved."
The band are set to release their next album, 'Dentures Out' in September, which according to the brothers, is the "most political" collection they've ever done.
