Scottish airport named second worst in UK for flight cancellations

ABERDEEN'S airport is the second worst in the UK for flight cancellations, according to new figures.

Data from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) showed that 5.19% of flights leaving Aberdeen Airport – 124 in 2386 – were cancelled in September.

It narrowly missed being the worst in the UK, which was Teesside International Airport with 5.22% of departures cancelled.

Cancellations and delays are the responsibility of individual airlines, rather than airports themselves.

Meanwhile, Edinburgh Airport had a 0.86% departure cancellation rate, making it the best in Scotland among airports surveyed, while Glasgow Airport saw 1.65% of flights leaving cancelled.

This places both of them ahead of Heathrow and Gatwick airports, which saw 2.75% and 1.8% of departures cancelled respectively.

Luton Airport beat both with 0.91%, while Bournemouth Airport managed to see none of its 785 flights during the month cancelled.

The CAA data does not include every airport in Scotland, with notable exceptions including Inverness Airport and Prestwick Airport.

A spokesperson for Aberdeen Airport said: “Airlines will reluctantly take decisions to delay or cancel flights for a number of reasons including weather issues, air traffic congestion, delayed arrivals or technical issues they may have with aircraft.

“On-time performance will always be an area of focus and we will continue to work with our airline partners and their handling agents to support them in improving overall levels of efficiency.”
