Scottish accent crowned nation's favourite but also hardest to understand

The Scottish accent has been voted the UK's favourite, according to a new survey.

We might be biased but we understand why our accent has been crowned top of the list by Betfair Casino, beating the Geordie and Welsh accents.

However, despite it being the nation's favourite it was also voted the most difficult to understand, with 34 per cent of people confirming they can't work out what Scots are saying most of the time.

Closely following Scottish in the top five accents considered the most difficult to understand, however, were the Brummie accent (18%), arguably made famous by hit BBC series Peaky Blinders, Scouse, Geordie and Northern Irish.

When it comes to dating Irish has been voted the flirtiest, with 16 per cent of the 2000 adults surveyed voting Irish as the one accent to leave them hot under the collar.

It was closely followed by Geordie (15%) and Essex (13%) which placed in second and third respectively.

As for the friendliest accent in the UK, Yorkshire topped the poll, stealing 23% of the vote - while Welsh (19%), West Country (14%), the Queen’s English (13%) and Northern Irish (11%) also made the top 10.
