When Scottie Scheffler returned to Austin to visit ESPN’s iconic College Gameday program, he thought he would be standing alongside the University of Texas men’s golf team as the Longhorns were honored for their 2022 National Championship. Scheffler, a Texas golf alumni, won the 2022 Masters tournament.
Things started as one would expect, with Gene Wojciechowski asking Scheffler for his Alabama-Texas prediction (which he decided would be a 35-28 Longhorn win, like a good alum). Then things got fun. Wojciechowski mentioned that Scheffler couldn’t bring the iconic green jacket with him on this trip, and said they had something else for him instead.
John Fields, the golf coach for UT, stepped forward with a shrouded item that would prove to be the Jack Nicklaus Award that goes to the PGA Tour Player of the Year. It was a very cool moment:

Scheffler was immediately overcome with emotion, but expressed his gratitude. With four wins, four top-five finishes, and 10 top-five finishes this season, it’s a well-deserved honor.
Now if only his football prediction would come true…
