Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay would be foolish to turn down a move to Newcastle United if bid comes in this summer. That's according to Steven Railston, Manchester United reporter for the Manchester Evening News, who has kept a close eye on the versatile midfielder.
The Scotland international scored a brace in a memorable night for his country, beating Spain 2-0 at Hampden Park to move top of the European qualifying group and is in form heading into the clash with Newcastle this weekend. Casemiro's suspension and Marcel Sabitzer's injury means McTominay could start at St. James' Park in an audition for the black and white faithful.
The Red Devils' academy graduate has been a mainstay in the first-team since breaking into the senior set-up in 2017. McTominay is one of the names to have been linked with a move to Tyneside this summer, with Eddie Howe's Magpies looking to take their squad to the next level.
Chronicle Live spoke with Railston for an insight into the Manchester United camp.
McTominay has been in impressive form of late and has been linked to Newcastle. Do you think he could leave Old Trafford?
Steven Railston: "There was interest from Newcastle in Scott McTominay mooted in January, but Ten Hag wanted to keep him at the club and that really wasn't a surprise considering the lack of depth Man United have in midfield.
"Casemiro is suspended on Sunday and Marcel Sabitzer is suffering from knee pain, which is being managed, so it's possible there could be just three senior midfielders, McTominay, Fred and Bruno Fernandes, at full fitness.
"However, McTominay has made just seven league starts this season and that is significantly fewer than in previous seasons. He was a regular starter with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and a move away would appeal for more regular minutes.
"He's an academy graduate and my feeling is he'd want to stay, especially with the club heading in the right direction, but if Newcastle push hard to sign him in the summer, it's an offer he'd be foolish not to consider.
"McTominay is likeable, he's an excellent professional and there are some popular misconceptions among supporters about his ability.
"I think he'd be a good addition for Newcastle."
What sort of fee do you think they would ask for?
SR: "I think it would take a bid in the region of £30million for Newcastle to land McTominay.
"He's just 26 years old, contracted at the club until the summer of 2025 and he's considered as an excellent squad player by Ten Hag."
