Scott McTominay transfer shunned by Newcastle United fans as they reveal alternative midfield target

Of the flurry of names being linked to Newcastle United each week, one name appears to crop up more than most - Scott McTominay.

The Manchester United man has been a mainstay in the Red Devils midfield, making over 200 appearances under five different managers since his debut in 2017. He’s also chipped in with 24 goal contributions in that time, including the opener against Everton on Saturday, despite his reputation as a defensive midfielder.

On paper the 26-year-old should be a perfect match for Eddie Howe’s side, and given that ChronicleLive understands enquiries have been made regarding a move for the Scotland international, it’s a transfer that could well come off this summer.

But it isn’t a transfer that has Magpies fans excited - at all. In fact, in a recent poll by ChronicleLive answered by thousands of supporters, a whopping 75% of respondents said they don’t want to see the midfielder move to Tyneside next season.

Those fans were then asked who they would like to see Newcastle move for instead, with Southampton captain James Ward-Prowse emerging as the preferred midfield target among supporters.

Free-kick specialist Ward-Prowse has made over 400 appearances for the club he joined at the age of eight, but the England international won’t be short of suitors this summer - particularly if Southampton drop into the Championship.

The 28-year-old took 40% of the vote, with Ruben Neves (24%), Youri Tielemans (21%) and Kalvin Phillips (15%) all trailing behind. All three players could be on the move this summer, with Manchester United and Barcelona credited with an interest in Wolves midfielder Neves.

Tielemans looks set to be available on a free transfer as his Leicester City contract enters its final weeks, and while Newcastle have been credited with an interest, questions have been raised over whether the Belgian would be a good fit for Eddie Howe’s midfield.

Meanwhile, Phillips’ lack of game-time at Manchester City has been well documented, and few eyebrows would be raised if the former Leeds United man chose to move on a year after his £42 million move.
