Scott McTominay touted for Man United striking role but Erik ten Hag takes hardline stance over Scotland hero

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has praised Scott McTominay but insisted the Scotland superstar's best position is in midfield - and not up front.

The 26-year-old scored four goals in two games for Steve Clarke's men during the international break when he bagged a double against Cyprus and former World Cup winners Spain. Scotland sit top of their Euro 2024 qualifying group after two games and with a trip to Oslo in June to face Norway they will be hoping for nine point out of nine.

McTominay has struggled for game time this season at Manchester United under the Dutch manager. Clarke also opted to start the midfielder on the bench for the Cyprus game, however he got his chance from the start against the Spaniards and he did not let his manager down. During his pre-match press conference ahead of United's trip to Newcastle on Sunday ten Hag was asked about the possibility of playing McTominay further forward.

On loan Burnley striker Wout Weghorst has started all 18 games he has been available for since signing in January. Despite the game time he has only scored two goals - both rebounds - against Nottingham Forest and Real Betis in cup matches.

With Anthony Martial out and Weghorst failing to net for the Netherlands in their qualifying defeat to France and win over Gibraltar, questions were asked about McTominay.

Ten Hag said: "Scott can play in many roles, it's clear he has scoring capabilities for Scotland but also this season for us he's a really good finisher but I see him as a midfielder so I think I'm happy with Wout is doing. Because when Wout is in the team the team is performing better."
