Scott McTominay reveals private text message with Lisandro Martinez after World Cup victory

Scott McTominay congratulated his teammate Lisandro Martinez on winning the World Cup with Argentina in a text at the weekend and the centre-back replied by saying that it was time for Manchester United to win the next piece of silverware.

McTominay represents Scotland, who failed to qualify for the World Cup, but Martinez played in five out of a possible seven games at the tournament and he looked overwhelmed with emotion after Argentina defeated France in the final.

Martinez will now return to Manchester as a world champion, while Raphael Varane will have to deal with the disappointment after just falling short in Qatar, but the pair aren't expected to be seen in action again until Wolves on New Year's Eve.

McTominay was asked what he wants to achieve in the next five years at a fan Q&A event on Tuesday and he outlined that he wants to win trophies at Old Trafford, before revealing what Martinez had messaged him after winning the World Cup.

“It’s a good question. I feel like the prime years in football are – it depends on how you look after yourself – but from 26 to 32, in my opinion anyway," McTominay said. " I feel like the games going that way with the longevity and stuff like that.

"Success will always be winning trophies and that’s the most important thing at this football club. With the manager that we’ve got now we’ve got a really good opportunity to start that journey, especially this year.

"We’ve got a really good chance to implement ourselves and really start pushing. I feel like this is the year where we can go for it and that’s firmly reiterated by all the coaches in the squad. They firmly believe that.

"I messaged Lisandro the other day and said congratulations and he said ‘we go for the next one’. He’s just won a World Cup, so that shows the mentality that is in the group.”
