Scotland goal hero Scott McTominay insists Georgia were “a little bit rattled” after they “didn’t want to play” before eventually emerging from their Hampden dressing room to be put to the sword on a chaotic night in Glasgow.
Leading through Callum McGregor’s early strike, the game was suspended with the pitch deemed unplayable due to a torrential downpour in Mount Florida. The game was held up for more than 90 minutes as Hungarian referee Istan Vad carried out a succession of pitch inspections and the Tartan Army fearing the game would be abandoned and replayed on Wednesday.
But as the rain subsided and the groundstaff worked wonders to improve the surface, Steve Clarke’s men were desperate to get the game back on. Willy Sagnol’s side weren’t as keen and initially refused to come out before the game eventually restarted and Manchester United man McTominay netted a second to continue his hot Hampden scoring streak and make it four wins out of four at the start of Euro 2024 qualifying Group A and put the Scots on course for Germany next summer.
McTominay told Viaplay: `’Obviously the first few minutes all players were saying 'you can't play on a pitch like this' but then we scored and then obviously they didn't want to play and we obviously did because we were winning and that's the way it has to be.
"Full credit to the boys. We were warm in there and kept our heads and I thought they were a little bit rattled when they didn't want to play so I feel like we kept concentration and the game plan and did really well."
