Scott McKenna to Celtic free transfer theory floated

Celtic should be looking to sign Scotland defender Scott McKenna this summer.

That's according to former Scotland international and current Motherwell right-back Stephen O'Donnell.

The 32-year-old played with the powerful centre-back during his time in Steve Clarke's national team squads.

McKenna, 27, is out of contract this summer with his deal due to expire at Nottingham Forest.

He spent the second half of last season on loan at Copenhagen where he featured in the Champions League against Manchester City, and has also plenty of Premier League experience.

He's managed 35 caps for his county, and it's that sort of pedigree that O'Donnell reckons Celtic should be looking to have in their ranks.

O'Donnell has warned Brendan Rodgers that should he want the defender, there will be stiff competition for his signature.

He told Clyde 1 Superscoreboard: "He is a player I know really well. I am friends with him. He is out of contract and any international who is out of contract who has played in the Premier League 50 times, there has got to be interest from both sides of the Old Firm.

"There will be lots of interest from other clubs in other countries but if they (Celtic) wanted him they would try and get him. Would I sign him for Celtic? Yeah, probably but I don’t know what the manager is looking for."

Meanwhile, Celtic are keen to make a move for Newcastle United goalkeeper Martin Dubravka, according to a report.

Rodgers is eying up the experienced Premier League stopper amid his search for a new No.1 at Celtic Park.

The Scottish Premiership champions are currently without a first choice heading into pre-season training later this month following Joe Hart's retirement from the game at the end of last term.
