Scott McDonald corrects himself after Old Firm 'slip' as Celtic hero makes title prediction

Former Celtic striker Scott McDonald was forced to correct himself during an interview after initially referring to Sunday's clash at Ibrox as the "Old Firm".

The Australian played for Celtic between 2007 and 2010 where he won a Premiership title and a League Cup.

And after initially referring to the fixture as the "Old Firm" when talking about the match-up between the fierce rivals in January, he quickly followed up by saying the "Glasgow Derby".

Celtic fans and officials haven't referred to the world famous clash as the Old Firm since liquidation in 2012.

Speaking to Sky Sports, McDonald said: "Look you'd have to say that they would have one hand on the trophy (if Celtic win).

"It would be down to them, the form they have been in. We've talked about them being 25 games unbeaten, that would be 26.

"And Ange Postecoglou, what a job he has done. We've talked about it loads over here in Australia, he is such an icon to the Australian game; the buzz that has been around Australia since that Old Firm..."

McDonald then stops himself, correcting: "...since the Glasgow derby game."

Rangers are currently 35 games unbeaten at home whilst Celtic haven't lost in the Scottish Premiership since last September.

McDonald went on: "It's neck and neck, we haven't seen this for many a year.

"The psychological games begin very very early on in the week.

"I think some of the players will be quite pleased that they're away on international duty to get away from all the hype."

"It's gonna be really interesting to see how both teams, particularly Rangers, set up.

"I think Ange learned a lot from his first game in charge at Ibrox. He didn't quite go with the normal tactics he was showing with his full backs inverting.

"They certainly did that in the second game at Celtic Park and they caused Rangers a lot of problems. "

The victory at Parkhead in January was their first league win over their biggest rivals since 2019.

Asked for a prediction ahead of the game, McDonald said: "I think it's going to be a tight affair and I think the first goal will win it for me.

"I think it will be a 1-0 victory to Celtic."
