If Scott Bessent is confirmed as treasury secretary, he has pledged to maintain the IRS Direct File program for the upcoming 2025 tax filing season, set to commence on January 27. During his confirmation hearing, Bessent assured Democrat Sen. Ron Wyden that Direct File would remain operational for this tax season.
Furthermore, Bessent expressed his commitment to thoroughly examine and understand the program if confirmed, ensuring that it aligns with the IRS's objectives of collections, customer service, and privacy.
The IRS introduced a pilot version of Direct File last year, enabling eligible taxpayers to submit their federal tax returns directly to the IRS at no cost. This year, the program will be available in 25 states, an increase from the initial 12 states where it was launched.
Despite its benefits, Direct File has faced criticism from some House Republicans who view it as a financial burden. They have urged President-elect Donald Trump to terminate the program, citing its funding source from the Democrat-backed Inflation Reduction Act.
