Scott Arfield post-Rangers life begins as Charlotte FC debut nearly capped off with 'great goal'

Scott Arfield began post-Rangers life by making his debut for Charlotte FC.

The former Light Blues star left the Ibrox side at the end of the season following the expiry of his contract. Michael Beale openly admitted the decision over the veteran was a tough one but in the end they came to the right call for both the player and the club. He has since moved on for a new challenge in the MLS and was introduced from the bench as his side drew 1-1 on the road at New York City FC.

Arfield made a habit of scoring big goals from the bench for Rangers. His Aberdeen super sub double last season to rescue a big win for Beale and Co after going into stoppage time trailing 2-1 was a standout moment in his campaign alongside his Champions League strike against Liverpool at Ibrox and he nearly made that instant impact once again in his new surroundings.

The 34-year-old picked up the ball in the final third and ran at the home defence. He produced a piece of magic to nutmeg his opponent but his touch after just got stuck between his feet with a covering defender on hand to bail out his team-mate.

His manager was full of praise for his first run out. He hailed his leadership and work on the ball as he labelled him an 'important addition' to his squad.

Speaking to the media after the share of the spoils, head coach Christian Lattanzio said: "I had the choice and I wanted to give a debut to Scott [Arfield].

"We can already see what he can offer us. Leadership, can hold the ball and try and play one-two. He still has to come to terms with our organisation offensively but he nearly scored a great goal by turning and running to the goal.

"He's an important addition to our squad."
