Wife-killer Neil Cumming is back in high security after he tried to stab a fellow patient with a cutlery knife just before he was due to be freed. Cumming, who stabbed his wife 36 times in a frenzied attack, was sent back to closed conditions last week from the low-security Royal Cornhill Hospital in Aberdeen, where he has been staying since late last year.
The 53-year-old has been enjoying “freedom” while in the north-east and was being prepped for release back into the community when he attacked another patient.
A source at the Royal Cornhill said: “He and another patient had an argument so Cumming picked up a cutlery knife and tried to attack the patient.”
Cumming spent nine years in Carstairs before being transferred to Aberdeen last October. He was acquitted of killing Jane, at their home in Longforgan, near Dundee in 2011, on the grounds he was insane at the time. The Daily Record revealed Cumming was a regular visitor to a retail park next to the hospital as he prepared for freedom.
The killer, who also injured several innocent people after trying to commit suicide by driving at 100mph on the A90 Perth to Dundee road before crashing into the back of a lorry, also enjoyed leisurely walks daily.
Cummings caused controversy when he demanded to be prescribed Viagra in 2018. We revealed how staff at Carstairs reacted with “complete shock” when they were told he was to be allowed the anti-impotency drug.
As well as sharing fears over safety, particularly for female employees, they had to field requests for the sex drug from other patients once word started to filter round the hospital.
At the time a source said: “Cumming is quite demanding. He’s an aloof character who keeps a diary of everything that happens in the hospital and displays paranoid behaviour often. He is constantly asking the staff for various requests and Viagra is just something else he wanted.”
Cumming previously tried to sue Tayside Health Board for £250,000 after claiming they failed to properly treat his mental illness before he carried out the attack on his 40-year-old wife.
He had been admitted to Carseview mental health unit at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee five months before the killing. His wife had tried to have him readmitted there just days before her death.
