Scots widow who lost husband to Covid in tears after Lorraine beach-hut makeover

A Scots woman who lost her husband to Covid burst into tears of joy after a makeover surprise from Lorraine Kelly.

Liz, from the west coast, was devastated after other half Gordon died from the virus last January.

The 61-year-old had written to the TV host and her makeover team of Louise Redknapp and Paul Wharton to ask for their help to upgrade their beloved beach house in tribute.

The couple, who were childhood sweethearts, had bought a hut by the seaside to enjoy their retirement and Gordon had promised Liz he would transform it before he passed away suddenly.

The pair were only just beginning to enjoy their newfound free-time ahead of Gordon's tragic death, and Liz said they were feeling "like teenagers" again.

She told the Lorraine team: "My husband took Covid. He died in January and this is coming up to a year when my whole future disappeared.

"Gordon had a dream of getting a hut and by chance we came across this wee place and we fell in love with it.

"It was our happy place and we were going to take our grandsons there."

She added: "We were like teenagers again. Now I'm lost.

"He went into hospital with Covid and never came out again.

"It hurts, it's a struggle every day and it's a pain that just doesn't go away."

Liz had been too upset to revisit the hut since, as it was "too sore" and reminded her too much of her loss.

She felt if she carried out the planned refurbishment, that would change.

She revealed: "The first time I went into it I had to go home. I just cried and cried and I thought I don't know how to go back.

"Right now it's just too sore to go in to the hut as I'm looking for Gordon and he's not there and not going to be there."

An emotional Louise told Liz she deserved to be happy again and to enjoy the space they had bought together, not feel guilty.

Paul added: "I want you to think WWGD - 'What Would Gordon Do?' Time does heal."

The team brightened up the interior of the little hut, from its dark and heavy colours with a red carpet and muted furniture.

They turned it pink, put happy pictures of the couple on the wall, and a heart to honour their love.

Louise told Lorraine: "A lot of people in the pandemic lost loved ones and we really felt for her on that day."

Paul added: "They called themselves the Nutter Hutters and planned on spending years of retirement bliss together."

Lorraine said: "It's all about good memories."

Seeing the resulting makeover, an emotional Liz cried tears of joy and was visibly overwhelmed.

She said: "Wow its amazing. It's wonderful.

"Gordon was wanting to change it for me and never got to do it and would love the fact you've done it for me.,

"I'd like to thank you so much for coming and helping me to move on in my wee hut.

"I felt as if i had taken gordon out the hut but you've helped me put him back in. He's back in this journey with me and we're going to share good memories again.

"The hut is amazing and it's got a different feeling now.

"It's my special, happy place."

Lorraine and Louise both said they'd love to visit in the future adding: "I want to make sure we get an invite so we can sit outside with a glass of something."
