Scots veteran runs 101 miles to raise cash for Doddie Aid charity

A Scots veteran ran non-stop for 24 hours to raise cash for Doddie Aid.

The ex-Royal Navy mine clearance diver, Gary Ferguson, ran 101 miles from Fort William to Glasgow on the West Highland Way over the weekend.

Gary says the experience was 'brutal' due to the cold and windy weather conditions he had to endure, reports Glasgow Live.

However, he managed to raise over £1,000 for the charity created by Doddie Weir, which aims to help find a cure to Motor Neurone Disease.

Gary said: "I can honestly say that I didn’t really enjoy it that much whatsoever. It was tasking mentally and physically.

"I think the only thing that got me through it was my grit, determination, stubbornness and the fact that I was doing it for a great cause and seeing there was donations coming in so I think that is what powered me through.

"Despite almost hating every minute of it and not wanting to run for a very long time of course I am super glad that I have done it.

"Helping raise awareness for a great cause like Doddie Aid, I would never regret doing something like that. I finished, I did it, I’m proud of it and it was a great thing.

"But it was absolutely horrible for the vast majority of the time, especially the late night bits."

During the run, Gary says he met a man called Paul who had heard about a journal he created.

He added: "The guy I met along the way who had heard about Combat Journal so that was a real boost. I left talking to him with a great big smile on my face and a bounce in my step.

"It was just a nice warm and fuzzy feeling and he definitely made me feel good so thank you to Paul who I met on the West Highland Way – he also donated to my fundraiser page so thank you doubly Paul."
