Scots to be dazzled by biggest meteor shower of the year this weekend – how to see

SCOTS are to be dazzled by the biggest meteor shower of the year this weekend, seeing hundreds of meteors wizz past the sky every hour.

The Geminid meteor shower, which takes place every year, is said to be the best chance for those in Scotland to catch a glimpse of a meteor shower.

This spectacular display is caused when pieces of debris enter the planet's atmosphere at high speeds, creating streaks of light across the night sky.

When will the Geminid meteor shower be visible in Scotland?

The Geminid meteor shower is active between December 4 and December 20, according to Royal Museums Greenwich.

The event will peak on the evening of Saturday, December 14 (9pm onwards) and on the morning of Sunday, December 15.

What will the weather be like in Scotland ahead of the Geminids?

In its outlook for Thursday to Saturday, the Met Office states that high pressure will continue to dominate, bringing fine weather with some sunshine and overnight frost and fog.

Blustery showers are also expected to die out in the south with patchy rain moving across the north later, affecting views of the meteor shower for some in Scotland.
