Scots Tesco selling 'Christmas chocolate' on shelves four months early sparks fierce debate

A Scots Tesco store displaying ' Christmas' chocolate' on shelves four months early has sparked a fierce online debate amongst shoppers.

A picture of the display was shared by a customer who was shopping at Tesco Shettleston, in Glasgow on Friday, August 12, when she spotted the tins on the shelves. Hundreds of tins of Celebrations and Mini Heroes, which are hugely popular at Christmas time, filled a large unit in the store.

Speaking to the Record the shopper said: "I had gone into Tesco for some refreshments because it's so hot outside. The last thing I expected to see was Christmas chocolate tins."

The sweet display sparked a fierce debate amongst Record readers - some of whom can't resist the treats.

Amanda Kirkwood quipped: "If I bought Christmas chocolate now I can guarantee you it won't be making it to Halloween, never mind Christmas."

Leeann Whaite commented: "I bought two the other day. Why not, when they are on offer at Tesco. I couldn't resist and will save them for Christmas."

Ann Rich Mctaggart said: "It is time for change. I’m buying chocolate for my Christmas dinner instead of spending £50 on gas for cooking a turkey. Will taste better too because there’s nothing tastier than chocolates."

Others wondered why so many tins of chocolates were taking up space in the supermarket.

Jeanette Chellew worries that the supermarket are just using the tins to cover up empty shelves. She said: "They’re just filling empty shelves to hide the food shortages."

Russell Campbell commented: "It's because nobody will have money left at Christmas. We'll be forking out £500 a month on gas and electric and won't have enough left for chocolate tubs."

However, other shoppers said they come to expect festive products early on supermarket shelves and said it was a normal sight.

John Holden commented: "This is nothing new. I worked in retail shops for 40 years and we always had Christmas stock in store and on display before September 1st."

Graeme Heatherwick added: "Christmas stock always comes in August or September."

A spokesperson for Tesco confirmed that certain chocolate tins, such as Heroes and Quality Street, have been offered at different times of the year in the past, and the popular treats are not specifically a Christmas item in the supermarket.
