Scots residents 'unable to drink or shower' as tap water turns brown

Residents in Bo'Ness have been left 'unable to drink tap water or shower' after being plagued by dirty water.

More than 40 homes in an area of Falkirk are thought to have been affected by discoloured water for months.

Resident Ally Finlay said he has been forced to travel to his parent's home to shower and has been unable to use running water from his taps.

Ally said: "Scottish Water said it was solved but it keeps re-appearing. I've had to shower, mainly by heading over to my parent's house."

Ally has been taking pictures of glasses filled with brown-yellowish water across several months after claims Scottish Water advised that it was still safe to drink.

Sharing a picture of the water he poured from his kitchen tap, he asked: "Would you want to drink this?"

Ally was told the water would be safe to drink (Ally Finlay)

Ally first shared a picture on Facebook in May with the caption: "Anyone's water out the tap broon? Scottish water say there's not a problem!!!"

His latest update reads: "Another day... another broon glass."

Scottish Water first responded to the issue in May this year but it is understood to have reoccured several times.

They added that issue often occurs within a specific location and tends to clear a short time after a pipe has been flushed.

Scottish Water are now planning to excavate a small section of the pipe to see whether the issue is being caused by deteriorating pipe work.

They are also investigating a possible burst in the area which may also be contributing to the discolouration.

Residents of Bo'ness will now be able to request bottled water via the organisation's helpline.

A Scottish Water spokesperson said: “We are aware of the recurrent issue of discoloured water in Cuffabouts, Bo’ness.

"We have flushed the pipe on a number of occasions which has temporarily resolved the issue however the discolouration keeps coming back.

"We are currently carrying out investigations in the area and will be excavating a small section of pipe to assess its condition. We have also located a possible burst pipe nearby which may be contributing to the discolouration.

"We would like to apologise to those residents who are affected. Those who are impacted by this issue can request bottled water from Scottish Water via our helpline."
