Scots question if Mel Gibson will star in Braveheart 2 after viral social media posts

CLAIMS have gone viral on social media that Braveheart 2 is in production, with a budget of $120 million. The only problem is, they’re completely made up.

The source of the new rumours appears to be an AI-generated trailer for “Braveheart 2 (2025)” – which appeared on Youtube on January 7 and has since been viewed more than 800,000 times.

The trailer includes lots of shots that look like they could be in a sequel to the much loved Mel Gibson epic – such as a horseman shouting “Onwards to Scotland” as he rides along a line of soldiers.

It claims the movie will star Robert Pattinson as King Edward I, Gerard Butler as James “Black” Douglas, Michael Fassbender as an unnamed character – and Mel Gibson as “Malcolm Wallace”.

Countless posts on Facebook, which have been shared hundreds of times, celebrate the arrival of the trailer and upcoming movie.

One states: “The legend returns. Braveheart 2, the long-awaited sequel to the Academy Award-winning classic, brings audiences back to the battlefields of Scotland, where the fight for freedom is far from over.

“Directed and produced by Mel Gibson, this gripping historical epic revisits the legacy of William Wallace and the unyielding spirit of a nation.”

It adds: “Produced with a reported budget of $120 million, this epic sequel promises to captivate a new generation when it storms into theatres in 2025.”

Of course, it will not be doing any such thing because the movie is not real.

Equally unlikely is Gibson reprising the role of William Wallace from the first Braveheart. The movie tells the Scottish warrior’s entire story – from childhood till death – so there’s not much space for a sequel or even a prequel.

That hasn’t stopped some people looking forward to Braveheart 2 though …

“About time an absolute cinematic classic gets a sequel!” one user wrote.

"Canni wait to watch it. Loved Braveheart," another added.

But thankfully not everyone was so easily tricked – and many remembered how the first movie ended.

One user asked: “How can they make Braveheart 2. Willy Wallace was hung, drawn and quartered in the first one.”

“So they've stuck him back together for a second go,” another said.
