A killer serving life has been jailed for three years for beating up another prisoner with a pool cue. Scott Fowler was covered in blood after the attack in his cell at HMP Shotts in Lanarkshire, a court heard.
Kirk McIntyre, 54, was found guilty of assaulting Fowler, 41, to his severe injury on August 8, 2020. McIntyre is serving a minimum of 20 years for the murder of Frederick McGettigan in Bishopbriggs, near Glasgow, in 2017.
The High Court in Glasgow heard that the 51-year-old was wrongly blamed for breaking into the home of McIntyre’s cousin Joanne Threshie, a lawyer.
McGettigan had found a handbag stolen during the raid and handed it in to the police. McIntyre went to his home and slit his throat. Threshie, who had been accused of inciting the killing, was cleared of murder.
McIntyre’s victim in the jail attack suffered a broken nose and needed stitches in head wounds. Hamilton Sheriff Court was shown CCTV footage of the killer going into Fowler’s cell and leaving two minutes later. Fowler then emerged, covered in blood.
McIntyre claimed he acted in self-defence.
Fowler, who is serving 10 years for an armed robbery in Fraserburgh, insisted he attacked McIntyre first. He said that he sustained his injuries when he banged his head on the concrete floor of the cell during a struggle.
But prison officers told prosecutor Rebecca Clark that McIntyre went back to his cell after the incident and told them ‘I hit him. There’s the pool cue. It was either him or me.’
After the jury’s verdict, Sheriff Colin Dunipace jailed McIntyre for three years, but this will start immediately and won’t be added to his 20-year stretch.
