Scots mum left 'shaking' after being followed by abusive driver on way to Asda

A Scots mum has been left 'shaking' after an abusive driver intimidated her following a near-miss crash at a West Lothian roundabout.

The woman claims she was worried about what the man was going to do to her after following her closely at speed, giving rude gestures and visibly shouting at her while her young children were in the back of the car.

Speaking to Edinburgh Live, the woman who wished to remain anonymous, said she was on her way to Asda in Livingston on September 22 when the incident occurred.

She said she was indicating to exit the roundabout near the store when the man came out of nowhere and nearly collided with her car.

She slammed on the brakes and then kept going, although the man started aggressively following her afterwards.

After getting her savvy 14-year-old daughter to start filming the man, he continued to gesture towards her and follow dangerously. She added that when they reached Asda, he reversed his car towards them which left her terrified.

She added: "There are four junctions on the roundabout coming towards Asda and I was indicating to go left when the car almost came into the side of me. I slammed on my brakes and the man pulled up close to me and was giving me abuse through the window. I couldn't hear exactly what he was saying but there was a lot of swearing.

"He then followed me and put his foot down to a point where I couldn't even see his bonnet in my mirror. I braked once to warn him off but he kept following closer and sticking his fingers up. I got my daughter to start filming so I could capture his face and number plate if anything else happened.

"At one point I was scared to brake as he'd just plough into the back of me. He came up the same street in the car park as me and was still giving me abuse, but I tried not to make eye contact with him. When we stopped I got on the phone to 101 to report him and I noticed he started reversing towards the car again.

"At that point, with my children in the car, I locked the doors and was shaking as I didn't know how far he was going to take it or what he was capable of. He obviously then clocked that I was on the phone and drove off. If he got out I'd have phoned 999."

The woman also uploaded footage to Facebook in an attempt to track down the man, saying that people like that often get away with instances such as this, with police reportedly informing her that the car was not insured and it was reported stolen from York.

Speaking about similar incidents in the past, the woman added: "Driving in Livingston is like hell, and I've no idea why as it isn't even that busy. People just don't seem to own an indicator or know how to use one, but they're the first to stop and give you abuse.

"You basically have to play a guessing game of whether to go or not. If this incident happened with just myself in the car, I'd have been scared, but the fact my two kids were with me I just didn't know what he was going to do next. There are people like me that do everything to keep a car on the road all year round, and there are others who pay no insurance or MOT but get away with stuff like this.

"I felt like confronting him once I had parked up but who knows what would have happened. Thankfully my daughter is pretty alert and got good footage of the man so I hope he doesn't get off with it."

Police Scotland were approached for comment.
