Scots killer who stabbed pal in row over beer dies in prison after one year

A thug who murdered his friend after a row over beer has died in prison.

Reece Sweeney was on bail when he stabbed dad-to-be Jamie McGready at a flat in Govan, Glasgow, in August 2020.

Friends and mercy crews tried to save Jamie - nicknamed Jaggy - but he died in hospital.

Sweeney had denied killing the 33-year-old, whose partner was pregnant at the time, but was convicted by a jury last year.

At the High Court in Edinburgh, he was sentenced to life and a minimum of 16 years behind bars before being eligible for parole.

Prison chiefs have confirmed his death, aged 24, at HMP Shotts near Glasgow.

A witness told the trial how Sweeney and Jamie had rowed “about cans of beer or something” before the killer lunged at his victim.

Jamie was said to have stated: “You have done me. You have killed me.”

PC Gary Hutchison told how he found Jamie lying amid “pools of blood” and performed CPR on the victim, but he could not be saved.

Sentencing Sweeney, Lord Boyd told the fiend: “You left school without any qualifications and you have never had a job.

“You have never amounted to anything.

“You’ve wasted your life with drink and drugs.”

He added that a social work report revealing the blade killer, also of Govan, didn’t go anywhere without a knife was “depressing”.

A statement from the Scottish Prison Service said: “Reece Sweeney, 24, a prisoner at HMP Shotts has died on 20 June, 2023.

“Police Scotland have been advised and the matter will be reported to the Procurator Fiscal.

“Next of kin have been informed and a fatal accident inquiry may be held in due course.”
