A bemused Scots holidaymaker has shared eerie images of their near empty flight from Edinburgh to Greece. Jak Scott "thought it was a joke" when he went to board his plane to Skiathos on Friday, September 30 and discovered there were no other passengers in sight.
Expecting a queue of jet setters, he says he was confused when despite a final call being announced via tannoy there was still little sign of other passengers. Jak was then told by staff that there were just a handful of people on the flight, he then decided to document the deserted Jet 2 plane.
Speaking to Edinburgh Live, he said: "With today's rising costs etc I was pretty shocked when I got on my flight to Greece on Friday as it was only myself and two other passengers onboard.
"I got to the gate early was confused why no one else was going through, it wasn't until they did the final call I got up and went to the desk, and the service agent walked me to the aeroplane door and told me it's only me and two other people. I thought it was some sort of strange joke until I entered the plane.
"I travel regularly and have heard about this a couple of times before but this is the first time I've ever experienced a flight so empty myself. I got served pretty much after the seat belt sign went off after take off. Staff mentioned it could have been to do with holidays but I find it really bizarre though as the ticket was only £59."
Just six days ago, The Guardian reported how 5,000 flights since 2019 have left UK airports with no passengers at all. A staggering 35,000 'ghost flights' have operated almost empty since 2019 with fewer than ten per cent of seats filled, totalling about 40,000 flights.
The report cited how air travel is repeatedly mentioned by climate activists for resulting in more carbon emissions an hour than any other consumer activity. They also called the ghost flight revelation "shocking" and said a jet fuel tax was needed and airport expansion plans should be questioned. The UK government describes ghost flights as “environmentally damaging”.
