The fraught family of a missing man last seen more than two weeks ago are fearing the worst as they desperately issue a plea for information.
Kevin Campbell last spoke with family on September 30, before his distraught parents reported him missing. Police initially reported him missing from Stovenhaven in Aberdeenshire, but there were sightings of him in Montrose on October 6.
The 29-year-old, who has suffered with mental health issues in the past, was in touch with his mum Anne on a daily basis, and his auntie, Lillian Sherriffs, every few days. Despite searches from police, friends, and family, his whereabouts remain a mystery.
Speaking to the Record on behalf of the family, Lillian, 64, who lives in Craigo, said: “His mother and father are beginning to get extremely worried.
"They’re fearing the worst. Kevin wouldn’t have just walked away because he always contacted his mum, every single day.
“I’m preparing myself for the absolute worst. The more time passes, the more your mind starts to wander.
“He messaged me on Facebook at 5.53am on September 30 to say he had just woken up and had £700 extra of benefits in his bank account.
“He was so upbeat. He was set to get a new kitchen. He had a new phone, he got himself a kitten that he absolutely worshiped. He had a new lease of life."
Two sighting of Kevin in Montrose have given the family a glimmer of hope. The former soldier was spotted at Bel’s Butcher in Murray Street and at the Grove Choppy in North Esk Road. However, both sightings were on October 6 – more than two weeks ago.
Lillian also said there was a possible sighting of Kevin in Provost Reid’s Road, and speculates he may have walked there from the chip shop via Whinfield Road and Faulds Road, next to the grass at Montrose Golf Links course.
Lillian fears his mental health problems may have resurfaced, with his medication left in his house.
She added: "He was on medication for [mental health issues] and going for it religiously. He’s missed hospital appointments since he’s gone missing.
"He left his phone on charge and the cat in the flat when he went missing, which isn’t normal. Kevin never went anywhere without his phone.
“His mother, Anne, is 68 and doesn’t keep well and is in a wheelchair, so he is always in touch with her. It’s just not Kevin.
“I’d like to think he’s met someone he knows and is in a house somewhere, I’d love that to be the case. But the longer it goes on and he doesn’t get in touch, the less I think that’s the case."
Police last got in touch with the family on Saturday to say his bus pass and bank card hadn’t been used – raising the question of how he got to Montrose. Lillian said Kevin never used cash and thinks he may have been given a lift.
She added: “My brother and sister-in-law just want as much information out there as possible to try and find him, they just desperately want to know that he’s ok."
Kevin is described as 5ft 8ins tall, with short brown hair and a goatee beard. He was wearing a black jumper when he disappeared. Police have urged anyone with any information to come forward.
A spokesperson said: "Kevin was believed to be in the Montrose area on Thursday October 6. Anyone who may have seen Kevin, or who has any information in relation to his whereabouts, can contact Police Scotland via 101 quoting incident number PS-20221005-1979."
