Scots enjoy 'taps aff' temperatures as Good Friday kicks off excellent Easter weekend

The mercury could soar to 16C (61F) over the Bank Holiday Weekend, the unofficial threshold at which Scottish men are allowed to remove their shirts in some comfort.

Exactly a month ago, March 8, Altnaharra in Sutherland was registering the coldest night of the year, at -16C. By coincidence, tomorrow could see plus 16C in the Glasgow area, coming close to the warmest day of the year, seen in Lossiemouth last Wednesday at 17C.

The Bank Holiday Weekend enjoyed a cracking start yesterday, with wall-to-wall sunshine for almost all of the country, making it 'taps aff' indeed.

A weekend of Easter Egg Hunts got underway at Pollok House in Glasgow and day-trippers packed out ferries on the Clyde Coast. Cal Mac warned drivers of 30 minute waits on the short crossing from Largs to Millport ‘due to the volume of traffic’.

Cal Mac issued an amber warning for passengers hoping to travel on the route between Ardrossan and Brodick, saying that ferries were becoming fully-booked.

Meanwhile, skiers were being welcomed at the Ptarmigan Bowl and Polar Express runs at Cairngorm Mountain Resort, near Aviemore.

Mum Jo added: “The snow is remarkably good for this time of year and hopefully they will be open for a few more weeks.”

Zac Marshall was skiing he said “Hopefully the sun doesn’t melt the snow too much as we are planning a long weekend of skiing.”

Josh Pringuer, 14, from Lincoln was on holiday with his mum and dad. After a stint of snowboarding, he said: ”It’s the first time that I have ever boarded in the UK at Easter. It’s great that they have the jumps built.”
