Ewan McVicar, 28, gave up his job in a warehouse four months ago to concentrate on music full-time and his breakthrough single was voted best dance track of last year.
And after a call with superstar DJ Calvin Harris – who has worked with the likes of Rihanna, Katy Perry and Dua Lipa – Ewan can’t wait to start work with the superstar from Dumfries.
Ewan, 28, said: “I was talking to him [Calvin] just the other day. We were trying to work out which would be best way for us to go about it. It’s mad, innit?
“Absolute legend of a guy. I can’t even believe this is my life.”
Ewan’s breakthrough single, Tell Me Something Good, reached No15 in the charts in November. It was voted best track of 2021 in BBC Radio 1’s Dance Awards and DJ Mag’s Best of British Awards.
It has taken him eight years to find success but he’s now getting recognised in the street thanks to his first hit.
Ewan said: “I get folk running up to me and asking for a photo. I don’t mind as it tells me what I’m doing is good. So, if anybody wants a photo, just ask.
“Tell Me Something Good was released under the radar and grew out of control, which is so, so amazing. I make music for me and if anyone else likes it, it’s a bonus.”
Ewan, from Ayr, whose new Movin’ On Over EP is out now, started playing venues in his home town before landing his own club night.
He said: “It had a huge impact. We reignited the town’s spirit with high-quality, community-focused clubbing experiences.
“I’m not sure anything of this quality has been replicated again so I’d love promoters to start something. I’d love to create my own legendary space, in Ayr.”
Ewan is now up to 2.2million monthly listeners on Spotify.
He said: “I didn’t know that. I tend not to look at stats, streams, likes and followers – it can be a slippery slope of cyber gratitude. I prefer having a swally with pals and them enjoying my tunes or live reactions when DJing.”
Having played his first show at Glasgow’s Sub Club last year, Ewan will return to the venue on April 14.
He played in London last night and has dates lined up across the UK as well as his first set on
the Boiler Room online platform in May, from Edinburgh’s Hopetoun House.
In June, he’ll be in Malta, at Annie Mac’s Lost & Found, and in July, he’ll play the Hideout Festival in Croatia.
He said: “I’m looking forward to playing around the globe – it was my dream for so many years.”
