A callous daughter who embezzled thousands of pounds from her dementia sufferer dad has been jailed.
Catriona Anne Fitzsimons stole £13,212 from Neil MacKinnon over 17 months after gaining control of his finances.
Shortly after his wife passed away, Neil displayed signs of dementia and Fitzsimons, 61, was granted power of attorney in order to look after him. She sold her dad’s flat in Glasgow and moved with him to Carloway on the Isle of Lewis.
When he deteriorated, he was moved to a care home in Stornoway but it was only after the fees went unpaid that the fraud came to light.
In April former nurse Fitzsimons, who runs an online jewellery business, appeared at Stornoway Sheriff Court and pled guilty to embezzling £13,212 from December 2017 to April 2019.
She was handed 80 days in prison last month. Neil, who was in his 80s, has since passed away.
But a source said: “Eighty days is not enough in my book. In most cases, the granting of power of attorney can be a good thing. For others, it can come at a cost that they may never imagine.”
