Scots cops probe 'abduction attempt' after girl targeted while walking to school

Police are probing claims a man attempted to abduct a girl as she made her way to school.

The 13-year-old believed the suspect raised the alarm after she was approached on her way to The Glasgow Academy on Wednesday morning.

The youngster is a second year pupil at the school which charges parents fees ranging from £9,700 to £13,224.

It is the second incident involving a child at the school to be reported to police within a week.

A 12-year-old boy told teachers that a man he didn't know told him to get in a car.

The driver told the first year pupil that he'd been sent to collect him because his mum had been rushed to hospital.

Police Scotland has confirmed an investigation is ongoing to establish exactly what happened.

The schoolgirl was left shaken after Wednesday morning’s incident, which took place in the Kelvinbridge area of Glasgow.

The school's rector Matthew Pearce has written to parents and informed them of the incident.

One mum said: "What's been reported by the children the last few days is really worrying.

"The school has told kids not to talk to strangers and to be extra vigilant.

"Thankfully whoever is behind this wasn't able to entice the children to do what he wanted.

"Last week a boy was told to get in a car because his mum had been taken to hospital.

"Now a man has tried to get a girl to come with him.

"Our kids have been told not to go anywhere on their own for the moment."

In a letter to parents and carers on Wednesday, Pearce said: "I would like to update you on the reported incident on Thursday, January 20.

"Police Scotland informed us today that, following investigation, there is no criminality, risk or cause for concern relating to the incident.

"A separate incident was reported to Police Scotland this morning and the matter is currently being investigated by them.

"Police Scotland have already established that there is no connection to the reported incident last week and they have reassured the school it is unlikely to present any additional concern for the community."

Steven Dignall, Director of External Relations at Glasgow Academy, told the Record: "An incident was reported to the police and we are liaising with Police Scotland.

"They have told us it is not linked to the incident reported last week.

"We have advised parents of this."

Police Scotland said "no attempt was made to approach" the teenager.

A spokesperson said: "We were made aware of a 13-year-old girl having reported comments overheard on Great Western Road during the morning of Wednesday, January 26, which caused her concern.

"Enquiries are now ongoing to establish the full circumstances."
