College counsellors are facing the axe despite huge demand from stressed-out young people.
Eighty counsellors have been employed in Scotland’s colleges and universities, allowing students vital access to mental health support.
Figures last year showed that 54 per cent of students reported suffering a form of mental health problem.
But Jon Vincent, principal of Glasgow Clyde College and mental health lead for the college sector, warned that the counsellors could lose their jobs as a result of spending cuts.
He said: "Over the past two years, myself and other college leaders have repeatedly asked the Scottish Government to support the future of this vital service, but funding is only in place until the summer.
"As employers, we don’t have the money to carry on the service from our own budgets.”
The Scottish Government said: “We have confirmed a further £2million … to March 2023.
No decision has been taken with regard to funding beyond the end of the current academic year.”
