The reward for information leading to the capture of Scots taxi driver George Murdoch's killer has doubled to £50,000, almost 40 years after the crime shocked the nation.
In 1983, while driving an unknown passenger in Aberdeen, tragic George 'Dod' Murdoch was attacked, brutally beaten and strangled. The murder, which was part of one of the largest manhunts in the north-east's history, has never been solved, reports Aberdeen Live.
George, was found dead beside his taxi with a cheese wire garrotte lying nearby.
However, now, 39 years on, a fresh appeal for information has sparked a new line of inquiry for cops and led to the doubling of the existing £25,000 reward for information.
Last week police revealed they were looking to speak to a 'small, stocky' man in his 60s or 70s who wore a top emblazoned with the Iron Maiden logo in Wilson's Sports Bar in 2015. The man is described as being local to Aberdeen and is believed to have information on the killing.
Alex McKay, George's nephew, previously told Aberdeen Live the killing had 'devastated' the family. He says finding the killer is about "more than justice" - it was about finding "closure" after decades of searching.
A spokesperson for the hunt for George's killer said: "Occasionally we hear people say of a cold case, that it will never be solved, hence a waste of time bothering to come forward with new information.
"Here is a prime example which disproves that theory. This alone may not solve this murder, but it could potentially mean that the investigation has taken quite a significant step forward. No mean feat after almost 40 years.
They added: "Increasingly nowadays, the passage of time is no barrier in cold cases. All that is needed is a caring and engaged public and a determined, highly competent and resolute team of detectives and police officers. In this case, we can guarantee all aforementioned requirements are met."
