ScotRail urges passengers to wear face masks on trains after legal rule lifted

Scotrail has encouraged passengers to continue wearing face masks after the legal requirement was scrapped in Scotland this week.

The rail network has asked travellers to wear masks on trains and within stations in accordance with the latest Scottish Government guidance.

ScotRail also confirmed the return of onboard catering in phases following its suspension during the pandemic.

The company's policy echoes that of the government which strongly advised people to voluntarily wear face coverings.

On Monday, April 18, Scotland's legal requirement to wear masks on public transport and in indoor public spaces - plus free rapid tests for most people - ended. These laws have been changed to guidance instead.

In a tweet on Monday morning, ScotRail announced: "We recommend customers continue to wear a face covering while travelling on our trains and at stations in line with Scottish Government guidance."

Scotrail confirmed its latest mask rules and the return of on-board catering (PA)

All trains have spaces for bikes and more areas are being added, said the firm in an announcement last week.

By the end of August 2022, a further 100 spaces will have been installed on the fleet of high-speed Inter7City trains, bringing the overall total to 1,506.

ScotRail was owned by Abellio, a Dutch transport company, until it returned to public ownership on April 1 for the first time in 25 years.
