ScotRail services suspended due to flooding as Met Office issues thunderstorm warning

ScotRail has been forced to cancel train services due to flooding as the Met Office issues a yellow warning for thunderstorms.

Torrential rain hit the city on Friday afternoon with a warning now in place for Glasgow and surrounding areas with thunderstorms and flooding to be expected.

The train operator confirmed that they received reports of flooding in the Crossmyloof area and were forced to suspend a number of services.

Trains to and from East Kilbride, Barrhead and Kilmarnock were affected. Further flooding was reported in Clarkston with services to East Kilbride not able to run as of 7.45pm.

Services to Kilmarnock and Barrhead have returned to normal. The Met Office warning is in place until 9pm this evening.

A spokesperson said: "A small area of thunderstorms is moving northwest across populated areas of southwest Scotland including the wider Glasgow area. 20-30 mm of rain is possible in less than an hour along with lightning and some possible hail."

Glasgow Subway has been forced to close one of its stations due to the adverse weather.

West Street station has been closed due to flooding. Shields Road station has also been closed to the public due to an electrical fault.

First Glasgow have also had to change their services due to the floods. Service 34 is currently diverting via Shawmoss Road and Haggs Road in both directions due to flooding.
