ScotRail are running an overnight service to and from Edinburgh as mourners pay their respects to the Queen.
From 5pm today until 3pm on Tuesday, people will have the opportunity to file past the Queen's coffin at St Giles' Cathedral in Edinburgh, before it is moved to Westminster. Thousands are expected to descend onto the capital with folk desperate to see the Queen's coffin - and ScotRail has announced they will operate an hourly overnight service between Edinburgh Waverley and Glasgow Queen Street via Falkirk High in both directions.
As reported by Glasgow Live, there will also be a 15-minute service between Scotland's two biggest cities from 10am to 4pm on Tuesday. Alongside the announcement, managing director Alex Hynes said: "We are deeply saddened at the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Our thoughts and prayers are with King Charles and the Royal Family at this time.
"We are doing everything we can to help people pay their respects at any of the ceremonial events taking place in Scotland.
"Our trains will be busier than normal, particularly to and from Edinburgh, during this period, and we will keep people up to date across our social media channels and on our website."
ScotRail will operate the following services on Monday and Tuesday
- An hourly overnight service between Edinburgh Waverley and Glasgow Queen Street via Falkirk High in both directions on Monday night into Tuesday morning.
- Additional carriages across the network for services to and from Edinburgh. We will monitor passenger numbers across the network and make further interventions where required and where possible.
- A 15-minute service between Edinburgh Waverley and Glasgow Queen Street via Falkirk High between 10.00 and 16.00.
- Express services between High Street and Airdrie (and then the normal service east of Airdrie to Edinburgh), with intermediate stations removed from the service. Shuttle rail services for the intermediate services will be introduced for those wishing to travel to stations between High Street and Airdrie.
Earlier today, mourners queued in the capital to be among the first to pay their respects to the Queen when her coffin arrived at St Giles' Cathedral.
